Renowned Winemaker

A 5th generation Northern Californian, Tony is an acclaimed winemaker with over 25 years of experience. His journey includes prestigious wineries such as Plumpjack Estate, CADE Estate, Duckhorn Vineyards, and Sinegal Estate Winery, before he took the helm at Hourglass in 2012. Tony's unique understanding of grape phenolics, masterful blending skills, and a modern yet traditional approach to winemaking has garnered him a stellar reputation amongst peers and critics alike. In 2020, renowned wine critic Antonio Galloni of Vinious recognized his exceptional talent, naming him Winemaker of the Year.

Tony will be working alongside Andy Erickson to craft the final blend for our 2022 vintage wines. This handover from one respected winemaker to another makes this journey even more special for Tony, especially since the two have been friends for over 25 years.

In Tony's words, "crafting wines from the legendary To Kalon Vineyard would be an honor for any winemaker, and taking the reins of this project from my good friend Andy Erickson makes it even more special. Everyone on the team has been engaging, driven, and passionate about crafting wines that capture the essence of To Kalon."

Although he’s originally from the Midwest, a summer in France convinced Andy Erickson that his calling was wine. Beginning his journey in Napa Valley and Sonoma, he soon moved to Mendoza in Argentina. Returning to Napa, he honed his craft, working under a number of renowned winemakers, including Paul Hobbs, John Kongsgaard, and Michel Rolland. After earning a master’s degree in enology, Andy worked as a winemaker at Harlan Estate and Staglin Family Vineyards, eventually establishing a consulting firm with his wife, viticulturalist Annie Favia, where he made such highly coveted wines as Screaming Eagle. Andy and Annie have recently established their own winery, Leviathan.

Nearly 30 years ago, Andy got his first taste of To Kalon Vineyard, as a student working in lots belonging to UC Davis. He’s been obsessed since.
