2023 H.W.C. CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The highly anticipated 2023 H.W.C. will be released to list members in September 2026.

Named after H.W. Crabb, the visionary steward and student of To Kalon who gave the vineyard its name in the late 1800s, our H.W.C is sourced from one block of vines planted to a heritage clone of Cabernet Sauvignon that produces impossibly small clusters of tiny berries yielding wines with remarkable energy and concentration.

100 Pts. "This potent, structured, memorable wine is built for aging but polished gently so it's drinkable soon too. Aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries and cocoa give way to a firm-textured palate sensation, focused black fruits, dark chocolate, blackberries and spearmint. Made from 100% cabernet sauvignon from the Mondavi heritage clone 31. Best from 2033." - Jim Gordon, JamesSuckling.com (April 15, 2026)

100 Pts. "The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon H.W.C. includes fruit from Mondavi 15 (near Detert and MacDonald), recently replanted to Mondavi's Heritage Clone. The wine is all Cabernet Sauvignon, yet includes delicate floral nuances to go along with masses of red and black cherries and hints of loamy earth. It's full-bodied, showing terrific presence on the palate, being dense and concentrated while revealing no excess weight. With a long finish that's rich but silky, dusty yet mouthwatering, it's the best wine I've tasted from this project to date, and it's impossible to imagine another one being better." - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (October 2, 2025)

98 Pts. "From the heritage Mondavi clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon H. W. C. tastes like the blood of Cabernet Sauvignon and shows how good this vintage is. Inky-hued, it reveals incredible levels of ripe currants, tobacco, iron, graphite, and crushed stone on the nose, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a more focused, elegant mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's another singular expression from this label that will benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for 30 years. Drink 2025-2055." - Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com (December 2025)
